Emerton extends Ewood stay

Emerton extends Ewood stayBlackburn Rovers utility man Brett Emerton has signed a new four-year contract to extend his stay at Ewood Park until at least June 2012.

The Australian international, who can play on the right-side or centrally in defence and midfield, has made more than 200 first-team appearances for Rovers since joining from Feyenoord for a reported £2.2 million in 2003.

And club chairman John Williams has hailed the announcement as "great news for the club".

"Brett has been an excellent servant over the last five years and we are delighted to have agreed a deal which keeps him here for another four years," he told the club's official website.

"He's a very willing member of the squad and a real club man."

The future of Emerton and a number of other first-team players at Rovers were thrown into doubt when former manager Mark Hughes left to join Manchester City.

However, Paul Ince has since arrived in Lancashire and appears to be steadying the ship somewhat.
